| FAMILY HONOR, Episode 2 Translated by Priscilla
Man on rooftop is shouting a lamentation, announcing the passing away of the great grandfather.
Danah runs inside the house of mourning and sees granny Samwol. They hug each other, crying out loud.
Inside the room, the family members are looking at the dead body, holding their tears.
Samwol: If you haven't left us yet, please come back to us, sir. Are you really gone, sir?
Joojung: Father… Father! (Cries out loud, and everyone else follows her crying).
NEXT SCENE
Old man: Let's make this a nine style ceremony.
Father: My father would like to keep this simple.
Man 1: Our name is at stake. So let's make this nine style…
Father: My father wants to keep this at five.
Man 1: You have the means. We should use this opportunity to let the people know who we are.
Old man: Don't you know President Ha's intentions? I think he wants to keep this quiet as not to disrupt the town.
Man 1: It's unlawful not to listen to us, the counsel of elders, and do as he pleases.
Old man: If it wasn't for President Ha, our clan would have disappeared from the books.
Man 2: You're right. It was President Ha who restored our lost heritage. And it was him who brought our families together when we were all spread out from each other. I feel it's only right to let him do as he pleases.
Old man: If there're no more comments, let's vote on this.
Joojung: These old men love to debate about rituals. (to the dead old man) You must be happy, father!
NEXT
Cleansing of the dead body and preparation for burial.
TY's wife: Grandfather should have something to eat. He didn't eat anything since yesterday afternoon.
SY's wife: When one of the parents die, the son is supposed to fast for 4 days.
TY's wife: What?
Samwol: During a funeral service, we must just follow the first wife's instructions.
TY's wife: But he's an old man… 4 days is too long…
Samwol: That's the law. Besides, President Ha wouldn't eat even if you ask him to.
Jongmal: (Crying) Grandma!
Samwol: You came.
Jongmal: How shocking! He was perfectly fine in the morning!
Samwol: That's right… How shocking! Did you bring everything I asked you to bring?
NEXT
Dong Dong: Dad!
TY: Yes.
Dong Dong: (struggling with his tie) How do you do this?
TY: I don't know how to do this either.
Father: Let's all be serious.
TY: (Kicking DD) I'm reprimanded because of you.
DD: Why do you kick me?
SY: Come over here. (He helps DD)
DD: Dad, is there anything you do well?
TY: You boy! (After a pause, he walks towards his brother) Do mine also. DD's mom did my ties every morning.
NEXT
TY's wife: Grand aunt! I'm curious… He passed away in Seoul. Why did they bring the body to Jongtaek without even cleaning his body? Does he need to be buried in this town?
Joojung: Don't you know I'm a rebellious child?
TY's wife: Grand-aunt… how can you say that? (Looking to the other women, then to SY's wife) Big sister, you know the answer, don't you?
Danah: There cannot be any funeral preparation before the morning lamentation.
TY's wife: What's a morning lamentation?
Danah: Mr. Park took great-grandfather's pajamas and cried a lamentation on the rooftop in the morning.
TY's wife: I see… That's like an announcement of the death, isn't it?
DA: Not really. It's a petition for the soul to come back to us if it has not left us completely.
Joojung: That's pure nonsense. Once he's dead, he's gone. What do we call him for? We just need to pretend we're good children. (She walks out)
TY's wife: Our grand-aunt's so peculiar. She cried the most, but she's already moved on. By the way, you went through this type of funerals in your parent's household, right? This is my first, so I don't know what to do.
SY's wife: What if I know what to do? I'm a first wife accused of adultery.
NEXT
The elders are still debating about the right ways of honoring the ancestors. Joojung is listening to them with disdain. Danah joins her, looking at her grand aunt with concern.
JJ: What?
DA: Nothing…
JJ: You're scared I'm going to say something out of place?
DA: Grandma…
JJ: Look at the excited faces of those old men. They're taking this business so seriously. (looking at DA) If I wasn't your grand-aunt, you'd like to force my mouth shut, wouldn't you?
DA: Mother always worried for you. She wished you'd cry and complain some times.
JJ: I guess your mom didn't know that my entire life is full of complains…
NEXT
Incense burning and bowing to the spirits.
JJ: (to Samwol) You don't want me to drink, do you?
Samwol: Just a little.
JJ: I'm trying hard to hold my tongue.
Dong Dong: Mom! I'm hungry. (TY's wife looks at the granny, wondering if that's allowed)
Samwol: The little ones should eat.
NEXT
DD: (refusing to eat kimchi) I don't want this.
Mom: You must eat this.
DD: I don't like kimchi.
Mom: You still must eat this, from now on.
DD: I don't want to!
Mom: Just eat this. From now on, you should eat the vegetables. You can't continue eating just rice with ham.
DD: My stomach hurts when I force myself to eat something I don't like.
Mom: Your elders will scold you.
DD: I don't live at grandpa's house.
Mom: You might have to live with them.
DD: Dad's not the first born. Why would we live with grandpa?
NEXT
TY's falling asleep. SY gives him a knock.
TY: I'm going to wash my face.
SuckHo: (to grandpa) It's still a long way to go. Maybe you should sleep a little.
Mangi: Do you understand why we use a different letter to describe a person's death than an animal's?
SuckHo: Because there's a difference in reverence?
Mangi: If you understand that, you'd live differently.
NEXT
TY: (to DD) Did you eat?
DD: Yes.
TY: (to wife) I think I also need to eat. (wife stares at him) It's better than throwing the food away.
Wife: The boy's listening.
TY: (to DD) Don't you want to go to the bathroom?
DD: Not really.
TY: Go to the bathroom.
DD: I don't want to go.
TY: Go anyways. (to wife) Honey… you know my heart, don't you? I can't do anything without you. I know I'm able to function only thanks to you.
Wife: Get out.
TY: I know you're upset at me, but still…
Wife: Upset?
TY: You're disappointed.
Wife: I lost all hope, you jerk.
TY: Why are you like this, honey? Can't you forgive that little incident?
Wife: (stepping hard on his foot) Save your nagging to someone else, you jerk!
TY: Honey, you know I trust you, don't you?
NEXT
DA: (massaging the granny's shoulders) What would we do without you, granny? (They continue listening to the elder's debates)
Samwol: It's always sad to see someone die. But since so many of his descendants are crying over him, I feel he's less lonely, don't you think so?
DA: Will you feel like that when you go also?
SW: Stop it. I don't want to hear you crying for me. How would I go in peace then?
DA: Then, you could come back to us…
SW: I don't want to. I want to leave soon, and see my lady. Why would I return?
DA: Who do you prefer? Me or my grandma?
SW: Bring me a scale. Let me weight you against each other.
DA: (hugging her) Even if you must go, don't go too soon. Who would I lean on if you're not here?
SW: OK, I'll live as long as I can keep my sanity. My Danah's so blessed. You're going to clean after me…
NEXT
After clothing the dead body and stuffing the mouth with food, they put him inside the coffin. Everyone's crying "Aygo! Aygo! Aygo!"
They bury the coffin.
Man 1: Elder Kwang mourned for 29 months. Elder Moo mourned for 35 months.
Elder: Why do you continue saying that?
Man 1: I'm just disappointed we're doing so little this time. I'm afraid this will become the norm.
Old man: Shut up!
Man 1: What is one month of mourning? (Crying)
NEXT
Visitors are walking inside. DA's students came.
Student 1: Professor!
DA: You traveled so far you must be tired…
Student 1: We wanted to send a few representatives only but we thought this might be the only chance to witness a traditional funeral. So we had to draw a raffle number to come here.
Student 2: The professors will leave Seoul in the afternoon, and those who went to Jeju Seminar will come as soon as they're done there.
DA: There's no need for all that… Anyhow, I'm thankful to you all.
Student 2: Let's go inside and pay our respects.
DA: (looking at Hyung Gyu) You're not in my classes. What are you doing here?
HG: I won the raffle ticket.
DA: Why did you take part of that?
HG: Didn't you know I'm pretty good at gambling?
DA: Go inside.
HG: I'm staying till the end. The more help you get, the better.
DA: Don't you have anything better to do?
HG: Aren't you still glad I'm staying?
NEXT
Students are listening to the explanation of the different parts of these funeral rituals and taking notes. HG is listening, looking bored.
DD: Mister, why aren't you taking notes?
HG: Me? I'm not in this class.
DD: What?
HG: I'm not a history major.
DD: Then, why did you come?
HG: Who are you? DD: I'm the great-great son.
HG: Great-great son? That means your great-grandfather passed away. How many generations apart? (counting with his fingers)
DD: You look stupid, Mister.
HG: Hey you, don't call me mister. Call me hyung (older brother). I'm pretty close with your aunt.
DD: Are you my aunt's boyfriend? (All the students look at them)
HG: I'm just a younger brother of hers.
DD: My aunt doesn't have a younger brother. What a weird man you are!
HG: I told you I'm your hyung…
NEXT
The elders are raising their voices, still debating.
TY's wife: Why are they fighting?
SY's wife: It's always like this.
TY's wife: They've so much energy. They're not tired of debating.
NEXT
Joojung's coworkers walk inside.
Boss: Wow! I knew you came from a noble family, but I didn't realize it was to this scale!
JJ: If you can admire a nobility that was bought with money, then I'll accept your complement.
Boss: Gosh! Always breaking the mood.
Colleague: (JJ pulls his sleeve) What's wrong?
JJ: Buy me a drink.
NEXT
Student 2: (explaining to students) The food that he used to have while he was alive has been prepared.
People are meditating with their eyes closed.
Jongmal: (to granny) What's wrong? Who are you looking for?
NEXT
Colleague: I'm going crazy! I can't believe this is happening. You're his only daughter. How can you be out here getting drunk during the funeral? Is this really happening?
JJ: Isn't money great?
Colleague: What?
JJ: You can do everything with money. You can re-establish a nobility with money.
Colleague: Of course money's good.
JJ: My father… he was addicted to gambling.
Colleague: Who, your father?
JJ: He was born in a noble family and inherited lots of money. But he lost it all, and he run away after selling his family's name away. Don't you think his life was pretty dramatic?
Col: How was your family's name restored?
JJ: Through money! My brother worked really hard and with that money he bought this amazing family name!
Col: Can you buy a family's name with money?
JJ: Is there anything that money cannot buy? Nothing. You can buy a family's clan, just like you can buy a nation.
Col: That's right! Just like the Israelites.
JJ: Yes! The Israelites! Is there a bigger clan than the Israelites? They're smart and hard workers. And with that money they bought the land. How romantic! Ha ha!
NEXT
DA: (to colleague) Have you seen my grand-aunt?
Col: She's sleeping in my car. She had a hangover medicine before falling asleep so that she'll be fine once she wakes up.
DA: I see…
Col: Your grand-aunt's so unconventional; you worry for her, right?
DA: She gets easily attached to people. That's why.
NEXT
TY & DD are falling asleep.
Father: (to SY) Take TY outside and check how our guests are doing.
NEXT
Father: (to Grandpa) You should have at least some porridge. If you go on like this, you might faint.
Grandpa: I heard he fed me porridge at first. He wanted to save the motherless baby, so your grandfather cooked wheat for me because he didn't even have white rice back then. Then, he feared he might lose me, so he held me tight and he went around the town, begging for any kind mother to breastfeed me. Then, after finally someone breastfed me, he brought me home. Seeing me falling asleep with my stomach filled for the first time, he felt he owned the whole world.
NEXT
TY: (to DD) Be alert. If you continue falling asleep, what are people going to say of your father?
DD: You were falling asleep also.
TY: When did I? When? I had my eyes closed meditating deeply about your great grandfather.
DD: Do you snore while meditating?
TY: Don't argue with me. Who did you learn that from? Girls won't like you if you keep complaining like that.
DD: Mom!
Mom: Yes…
DD: I'm going to marry the girl you choose for me. I won't marry the girl dad picks.
TY: You're so good at praising her!
DD: Ah, I have to go!
TY: Make sure you clean yourself well. If you dirty your pants again, your mom's going to be mad.
Wife: Choose a good wife for him.
TY: What? What should I choose?
Wife: DongDong's wife.
NEXT
Boss: Bengdo, can't we play GO-STOP during such long funerals?
Bengdo: Of course not. These are serious funerals.
Boss: Then… What can we do during this long night?
Bengdo: Do you want to play rock-paper-scissor?
Boss: We can't bet money then.
NEXT
DD: Mister, everyone else who came with you left. Why didn't you go with them?
HG: I told you I'm very close with your aunt. And I told you to call me 'hyung.' Why do you keep calling me mister?
DD: You said you're not my aunt's boyfriend.
HG: You don't have to be a boyfriend to be closed. We have a very special type of friendship.
DD: How can a boy and a girl be friends?
HG: Even if you belong to a noble family, how can you talk like that?
DD: My dad told me, that there cannot be friendships with the opposite sex.
HG: Your dad taught you a bad thing. Anyways… are you busy?
DD: Why?
HG: Can you go inside the kitchen and ask your aunt to come out?
DD: Why?
HG: So she can rest. This is what friends are for. If your friend's tired, you help your friend to rest.
DD: How old are you, Mister?
HG: Me? I'm 24.
DD: My aunt's 30. In my school, if a first grader wants to be friends with a second grader, he'd get beat up.
HG: Look at him! He's rough, just like his aunt!
NEXT
SY: (to his wife) You're tired, right? Thank you…
Wife: You're so formal. Do you know how disgusting that is? Even though I'm 4 years older… other men aren't like that to their wives.
SY: I always talked like this to you.
Wife: Why didn't you tell the elders from the beginning? That you'd marry anyone they'd pick, but to pick for you someone around your age.
SY: I never complained you were older than me.
Wife: Of course. You never complained about anything. If the elders tell you, you'd not only marry, but you'd drink poison and jump into a burning fire.
SY: I know I'm responsible for what you did. That's why I'm sorry.
Wife: Stop talking like that! I did it because I missed the touch of a man. Is there anything else we should discuss?
SY: Honey…
Wife: I wish you'd raise your voice to me, at least once. Can't you slap me and demand an explanation from me?
SY: I don't have the rights.
Wife: Just because you don't touch me, is that excuse enough for me to do what I did? Can't you scream at me and be mad for once?
SY: I just couldn't… I saw you always working hard, and I felt that I would add to your burden.
Wife: No other men would be like you, not touching the wife for fear of burdening her.
SY: I know it's my fault. That's why I'm sorry… Would you give me one more chance?
Wife: We can't fix what's broken…
SY: I was the one who broke the glass.
Wife: I… was accused of adultery. Your brother caught me committing adultery!
Noise of falling plates. Danah heard them.
Wife: I'm relieved that you found out. Would you let the elders know?
SY: You heard what you were not supposed… Your brother's an awful man, don't you think so? I don't know when the problem started and how.
NEXT
Samwol: Bring the empty plates, hurry!
Jongmal: Yes…
NEXT
JJ: Brother, I really have lots of things to tell to father.
SuckHo: Aunt… Are you drunk?
JJ: Now the burden's entirely on you. You must take all my bottled up anger against father.
Mangi: Yes, I will.
JJ: Father, are you able to see now? You told me that the dead can see everything. (touching her heart) Here… right here, father! It hurts a lot. I won't forgive you, father… Never. I won't, I won't forgive you!
NEXT
ChongGap: (getting off the car) Surely, the funeral of an aristocratic family is different.
KS: Are you intimidated?
CG: Are you kidding me? If we buy one such names, we can easily arrange this type of funerals also. Take good notes. Make sure you write everything that's happening here.
KS: Yes, I'll take mental notes.
CG: Are you giving $1,000 won offering?
KS: Isn't that too much?
CG: If you want to get noticed, you have to do it well. Think Big now, Big. How else are you going to let people notice who we are?
NEXT
CG: I'm really sorry.
Mangi: I thank you for coming here.
CG: He must be a fortunate man. At least he passed away surrounded by all these.
Suckho: We shouldn't talk about good fortune when we lose our parents.
CG: However, dying like this is fortunate, isn't it? (People look at him, annoyed. KS feels uncomfortable) I was surprised at the number of guests here. The town official should come here to help organize the traffic. I will speak to him on my way back.
Sukho: I thank you for your concern but we wouldn't want to disrupt the town.
CG: Still, the elder of a great family has passed away. The officers of this town should… (KS hints him to stop talking) Anyways, I'd like to see how an aristocratic family does the funeral services. I myself descended from an aristocratic family, but I must recover its status first, so I feel connected to this situation here. Please, allow me to greet you again later before I leave. (He leaves with his son)
TY: What family name is he trying to restore?
NEXT
CG: What are those boxes in the front for?
KS: How should I know?
CG: Write that down. How great it would be if your grandfather were alive. If we had learnt from them and used it at your grandfather's funeral, we would have felt really dignified.
NEXT
CG: Are you collecting the guest's names here?
Man: Yes, you can just leave us your business card with us or write your information here.
CG: Let me just start up with our offerings. (He puts an envelop on top of the table.)
Man: We don't accept offerings.
CG: Why would they trouble themselves with such a big funeral if they don't accept offerings?
Man 2: (Giving each one a bag) This is a small present, please take it.
NEXT
CG: (Opening the bags) What the heck is this?
KS: (He finds a $10,000 won bill) How should I know?
CG: (Holding a small pillow-like thing) What about this, what is this?
KS: Don't ask me since I don't know.
CG: Wow! In aristocratic families, rather than receiving offerings, do they give? Is that their custom?
KS: I guess so.
CG: This doesn't go with my personality. But maybe they're right! How much offering would they collect overall anyways? This looks a lot more sophisticated. Write this down also. When I die… (showing the $10,000 won bill) put $20,000 wons instead.
NEXT
CG: I really feel connected with all this. My father descended from a noble family that went bankrupt. So he lived all his life wanting to restore his legacy, but he passed away without accomplishing it.
Old man: Is that so? Then tell us, what was his tribal name?
CG: Pardon me?
Old man: His family name.
CG: I don't want to boast, so I don't think I should tell you now. Maybe I should wait till I've restored our family's name first.
NEXT
KS (bumping into DA): Can't tell if this is a blessing or a curse ~that we should meet here again. Seeing that you're wearing the mourning dress, I guess you are a member of this family. How are you related with the diseased person? (DA tries to ignore him and leave but KS stands in front of her) Is it OK for noble families to ignore the questions of their guests?
DA: I'm his great-grand daughter.
KS: I see. You were in a rushed then. It must have been because of your great grand father's health. Then… your family's pretty well off. If you were so desperate to take that plane, you should have given me the $100 million wons I asked you. I would have given you terms.
DA: How intolerable! To joke in front of someone who's mourning the death of an elder!
KS: Holy cow! Surely the noble people do act and talk differently than most people. Did you learn that from school? (DA tries to leave again but KS holds her) I'm really curious. I want to teach this to my sister. (SLAP!)
Samwol: Danah! What have you done? He's a guest.
KS: (touching his cheek) This hurts.
Samwol: This child has gone through a great loss, that's why she's overreacting. Please, forgive her.
KS: You must be the wife of the diseased man. Nice to meet you.
Samwol: I'm the house keeper.
NEXT
CG: These people! What are they so curious for? (bumping into KS) Where were you?
KS: I just walked around.
CG: Did you find anything interesting? KS: Of course we must get an aristocratic name. But we must also find a good house keeper.
CG: What about a house keeper?
KS: If you want to do this, you must do it well. Over here, even the kitchen lady talks differently.
CG: Then you must scout her. How much salary does she get?
NEXT
KS is examining a room, and he finds a picture inside a book.
Jongmal (serving food to CG): We kept this simple because it's a funeral, but please, enjoy this. (Looking at the picture KS's holding) Oh! That's Danah's picture.
KS: Is she the great grand daughter of this household?
Jongmal: Yes. But how did you find that picture?
KS: It was inside this book.
Jongmal: Yes…
KS: This looks like an ancient picture.
Jongmal: This was taken while she was studying in Chonghakdong.
KS: Chonghakdong? Did the young lady grow up in Chonghakdong?
Jongmal (putting the picture back): Yes.
CG: Miss.
Jongmal: Yes? CG: Did all the children of this household get educated in Chonghakdong?
Jongmal: Not really.
CG: You just said that the picture was taken while growing up in Chonghakdong.
Jongmal: Only Danah. She studied there since she was 7, for 10 years.
CG: It must be their norm to send their girls to study in Chonghakdong. That makes sense. That could be the best way to teach a girl good manners. What if we send Haejoo…? I guess it's pretty late? I should have known these things before!
NEXT
Outside. Family members are gathered in the middle, kneeling down in front of the tomb and crying 'aygo'! The rest are standing behind them.
CG: We are a small family, that might be a problem.
Lee KangSuck watches Danah grieving deeply. Jung Hyung Gyu is also watching, a little further behind.
NEXT
Lee Kyung In walks in, intimidated by the grand funeral.
SuckHo: How did you get here?
KI: By car.
SH: Did you drive?
KI: Our colleagues were coming here, but I had to finish some work before, so I left later.
SH: You should have stayed there.
KI: (Looking around) I could tell you belong to a special family.
NEXT
Danah sees Kyung In feeling nausea.
DA: Are you OK? KI: Yes, I'm fine. I just have carsick.
TY: Welcome… (She starts walking away, holding her mouth with her hand)
DA: Who is she?
TY: She's in charge of the marketing department. Is she OK?
DA: She said she has carsick.
TY: She should have come with others. Did she come by bus? She drives… Can you get carsick when you drive?
NEXT
TY's wife: Sister-in-law, you should eat something. What are you doing? You don't sleep nor eat, and you're just working. You can get sick easily like that.
DA: I'm fine. Granny, don't we have any medicine against dizziness?
Samwol: Dizziness? Someone's dizzy?
DA: Yes, a member of Dad's company.
Samwol: We don't have a medicine for dizziness, but we might have Mr. Ha's digestive pills.
NEXT
Danah's bringing the digestive pills and she overhears…
SH: You are expecting. Why did you travel this far?
YI: I wanted to witness how a member of the aristocracy does the funeral.
SH: I feel sorry that you're suffering like this because of morning sickness…
YI: It's only for today.
SH: What do you mean?
YI: I'm getting an abortion tomorrow.
SH: …
YI: Can the elder of the house leave the mourning spot?
SH: Please! Don't do anything rash! Right after the funeral, I'll go up to discuss with you.
YI: Discuss what? The abortion is fast and clean. (She walks away. DA looks at her dad with pity.)
NEXT
Hyung Gyu: Are you going to follow your great grandfather and die? Have you decided to die as an old maid?
DA: I'm not a maid.
HK: I heard it's only on papers!
NEXT
CG: Shouldn't we stay up all night here?
KS: Even if we don't, there're plenty of people staying.
CG: But we must stay if we want to learn how they spend the night also.
KS: We'll have enough opportunities to learn those things.
CG: Obtaining an aristocratic name is important. But I think it's more urgent to find a traditional house. That would keep us quite busy… Anyways, they really look dignified, don't you think so?
KS: Yes, they do.
NEXT
The night continues, with a band of mourner/dancers crying in the traditional ways.
Woman 1: Where did they find a man with such a nice voice?
Woman 2: Really!
Woman 1: He's great.
Samwol: (to DA) Actually, the Ha clan didn't have crying dancers. But when my lady married into this family, she prepared the funeral for an aunt of this family. And she called these performers from her own clan to cheer up the people helping at the funeral. My lady (sighs)… she was a really bright and a very thoughtful lady!
MAMGI'S FLASHBACK
Voice: Mangi.
Child: Yes, father.
Man: You see that house? That's the house your father was born at. And your grandfather was born there, your great grandfather, as well as your great great grandfather.
Child: Yes…
Man: I'm sorry, Mangi. You should have been born there also, but because of my mistakes, I couldn't keep that place for you. But don't ever forget this, where were your ancestors from, and how they lived and died.
Grandfather Mangi remembers.
NEXT
The funeral procession continues. The women are holding their tears while the men are walking along the procession. Danah's tears are thick…
NEXT
Dong Dong: Mom, do I have to go to school now?
Mom: Of course, what do you think? You missed more than a week of school because of the funeral.
DD: It was tiring, but I liked the fact I didn't go to school.
Joojung: Like father, like son.
TY: Grand-aunt! I got perfect attendance during elementary school.
JJ: Oh, really? I had thought you did poorly in school because you missed classes.
TY: Grandma!
NEXT
Mangi: I could see you've worked hard.
Man: It was nothing.
Mangi: Give away this year's crops to the townspeople.
Man: All of them?
Mangi: I should do it myself. But since I can't meet all of them in person, greet them for me.
Man: Yes, Mr. Ha. Everyone will be so happy.
Mangi: (to Suckho) Don't forget to send thank you letters to all the townspeople.
SH: Yes, father.
NEXT
Mangi: Are you all ready?
Samwol: Yes, Mr. Ha.
SY's wife: Grandfather, I've something to tell you before we move.
NEXT
Mangi: Tell me now.
SY's wife: I… won't go back to our home, grandfather.
Suckho: My daughter…
Mangi: Excuse us.
Samwol: Yes, Mr. Ha?
Mangi: Take Dong Dong with you.
Samwol: Yes…
Mangi: You can continue. SY's wife: I don't want to go back.
Mangi: What's the reason? You must have a reason for not wanting to go back.
SY's wife: This man won't be able to tell you, so you should ask Danah for details.
TY's wife: I won't go back either, grandfather.
Suckho: You too? What's wrong with you all?
TY's wife: I'm going to divorce Dong Dong's dad.
TY: (grabbing her) Come out. Let's talk outside.
TY's wife: Why are you doing this? They'll find out anyways.
Mangi: Let go of her hand! (to Suckho) You tell me what's happening to your children.
SH: I... don't know.
Mangi hits his son with a wooden brick. People are shocked.
Mangi: And do you call yourself a father?
SH: I'm sorry, father. I didn't raise my children properly.
TY: I cheated on my wife. (Father & grandfather stare at him) Yes, I cheated on her. That's why she reported me to the police.
Magi: You fool. You're bringing your shame on us all. I wonder how someone like you was born into our family?
TY: I'm not the only one! Brother's even worse! He kneeled down before our sister-in-law after she was arrested for adultery.
JJ: What kind of nonsense is that?
SY's wife: It's true…
Suckho: I'm sorry father. This happened because I didn't discipline my children properly.
Mangi: I tried to restore a clan that was going bankrupt. Was that too big of a sin? Maybe it was going bankrupt foreseeing our descendants will be like you. Since I restored it by force, am I being punished now?
SH: Father…
Mangi: It was going bankrupt anyways…

無막장 '가문의 영광', SBS인센티브상 수상 ****Makjang: Extreme “FAMILY HONOR,” SBS Good Incentive Award
김지연 기자 | 2009/04/23 15:13 | 조회 329 REPORTER Jiyeon Kim, April 23rd, 2009 (Translated by Priscilla)
막장 드라마가 판치는 요즘 보기 드물게 '착한 드라마'라는 호평을 얻은 SBS 주말극 '가문의 영광'(연출 박영수ㆍ극본 정지우)이 인센티브 상을 수상했다. In a world of today, where makjang dramas reign unchallenged, the SBS family drama “FAMILY HONOR” became known as a 'nice drama,' (directed by Park Yeong Soo, written by Jeong Ji Woo) winning a ‘Good Incentive Award.’
The President of SBS Kumyeol Ha presented the ‘Good Incentive’ money awards and prizes to the producer of "Family Honor," Yeong Soo Park P.D. and the rest of the production team, for helping raise the good image of SBS company and its broadcasting programs.
지난해 10월11일 첫 방송된 '가문의 영광'은 가족 간의 사랑과 화해를 그리며 30%에 육박하는 시청률로 뜨거운 사랑을 받았다. Starting on October 11th of last year, “Family Honor” portrayed the love and reconciliation within family members, and it became really popular, ratings going up to almost 30%.
Moreover, while makjang dramas such as “Temptation of the Wife” is ruling the day, “Family Honor” portrayed the story of an oldest son and his siblings and the rest of the family members, and the development of their love relationships.
****Makjang drama: extremely violent, irrational, exaggerated, blown out of proportion. Honestly, I was a little confused with the title. Is the title implying that FH is makjang or not? Some other articles said something like: "Why Family Honor succeeded 'in spite' of being Makjang" In someone's blog, she compared this drama against other 'makjang' dramas... and someone replied and said that FH was also 'makjang.' Of course, this person got twenty some replies refuting that opinion... but still~ I am... confused
| Hi, I can't believe this drama's over. Now now... what drama should I watch over the weekends?
Anyhow... I've been reading some Korean articles/blogs about this drama, and there's a blogger I really like... Do you think I could translate her writing (s)? I already asked her but didn't give her enough time to reply ...
Meanwhile, before you all leave us, let me give you a preview of what some of FH lovers are planning to do... Xjunebugs and I have decided to translate the whole series, and many other people offered to help us so I think it's doable.
I don't know if anyone noticed, but Shirley's the new owner of this thread, and she's trying to update/add links and info in the first page as we go. Let's applaud her and help her with all kinds of info/inputs! (Especially, sending her links.... I'll send her the ones I translated.)
As per the translations, I believe we could have editors and subbers later on, but for now, Xjunebugs finished episodes 46, 51, 53 & 54. She's now working on 52.
I did most of 46 (never mind, we could use Xjunebug's), 47 and 49. This means that, if we finish 48 and 50, we'll have finished translating 46 to 54. After this, I think we should start translating from episode 1 onwards.
I know Sandybabe translated previous episodes, plus there are other partial translations going around... if any of the translators read this, please let us know if you'd let us use your tranlations also.
I'm posting this here, first to encourage everyone to stay put, and also to ask for more volunteer translators. Eventually, I'd need everyone's e-mail addresses so that we could mass e-mail each other. But this is just the beginning stage...
FAMILY HONOR~ Fighting! Soompier's FIGHING!
| Like many of you well said, a 54 episodes drama is too long for me to translate on my own (thank you for your concern). So unless I find myself a partner, I decided not to begin this project. On the other hand, this episodes' sooooo good I'd like to translate, but don't know where to start... (missing the first 15 minutes)
Let me just share the beginning scene I watched from the shared file that Shirley uploaded today:
KS: (pointing a DA) If it wasn't for this woman, I would have continued looking down on those people, disgusted at their victim mentality. But I've changed. If I did any wrong, and I need to pay for it, I'll pay.
KS's mom: (tearing) Kang Suck...
KS: However, father... My heart is at peace, more than ever before. I feel at peace after acknowledging my wrongdoing.
KS's dad: If it wasn't for me, you might not have to face the insults from everyone...
KS: But father, even if I were to be born again, I will be born as your son (of both father & mother). But please, don't tell me then that I should fight against the world (to step on others before others step on you).
Dad: Yes, if we're born again as father and son, I'd tell you then that you should be kind to others, and that you shouldn't go around hurting people. I'd tell you that this is the way to find peace in your heart.
KS: I'll be waiting for such a day.
Dad: Wait and see how your father will act in our next existence...

DD says he's not like other kids. He's from a respectable family so he knows how to behave. TY was saying: "Just like me..." DD says he's like that thanks to grandfather.
<<< up in their room DA was watching KS with the kind of warning eyes hah and saying the mother saying not to believe any word of the man ..~ she saying how can she be sure KS wont end up like his father ..since he also go to such places hah ..KS trying to defend himself but he only got a pillow from DA and she asked him to go down and sleep with father in law~ till he is sure he wont do such things (actually i think DA send him down so the father in law wont feel so embrassed or suffer alone ~)
HJ saw KS came out haha asked her brother what happen. .he say he had to go sleep with father .~
the father was happy he has company hahahha~ gosh even want to have a drink with KS ~ the son was so unhappy to have to receive this treatment~ and leaving such a pretty wife in bed alone!!>>>>
At first, DA offered their room to the father saying that they could sleep in the living room instead (can U imagine? ) But father said mother would be upset if she finds out (that he's not repenting of his sin!!).
DA looks at KS with reproachful eyes and she kicks him out of the room. KS complains why he's paying for his father's sin, but DA tells him that this is to prevent future such sins... and also as a punishment for having followed his father to those places since he was in college.
Father: Why are you here?
KS: It' s all your fault, father!
Father: What did I do?
KS: I'm getting punished because you took me to the cabarets when I was in college.
Father: Wow! Your wife's a woman, just like others! I thought that, since she's so well mannered, she wouldn't get jealous.
KS: Are you happy now?
Father: I was bored, so I'm glad. Should we get some drink?
KS: If mother sees you drinking, she'll say you're not repenting.
Father: You're right... Go ahead and sleep here then.
KS: Why am I being punished because of you?
Father: Don't whine. It looks like your wife sent you here to keep me company because she couldn't bare see me sleeping alone in the sofa. You should be thankful to have such a thoughtful wife.
KS: Why should I sleep here instead of sleeping next to my pretty wife!
Father: Are you the only one with a wife? Stop boasting...
<<<>>>
To HJ, DA explains she sent her husband to keep the father company. Meanwhile, they decide to make fun of the 'husband/brother.' KS comes to grab a blanket and hears them. HJ tells DA that KS fainted once in his lifetime... when he was in High school, and he saw a roach... He denies it: "No, I didn't faint!" But HJ insists: "Yes, you DID!!"
<<<>>>
Granny is talking to her young mistress as if she were alive.
Granny: My lady, the weather seems nice! I was worried that it would rain on your wedding day but it's clear! My lady... people are saying that your husband's good looking!
<<< she having coffee with DA ~ ahh KS mother was asking if she think they are so strange family .with such things happening but DA seem to comfort her .and saying no , that she find it interesting as her own parents dun really ..^ which make the mother suddenly so happy
lol KS wake up .and saw both of them in the kitchen and i think he was complaining how he cannot sleep in the sofa .his whole body ached !!
his mother ~ so funnie ..told DA about her son when he was young ~ hahah his secrets seem to be revealed to DA one by one by the women in his family ~ i think the mother say about how bad his studies and something else
hahah DA was saying she had thought he is a man with chrisma and now she changed her mind haha omg she make fun of him and say there is a coakcoach and he really jumped to hide behind her back~>>>>
Mother asks DA why she's up so early, and why is KS sleeping in the sofa.
DA: I think he felt sorry for father, he told me he'd sleep here.
Mother: Yeah right! We'd surely do that! You sent him here, didn't you? Let's have coffee.
She then tells DA: "You're thinking we're a messed up family, aren't you?" But DA tells her she envies their mutual honesty and spontaneity... that she never witnessed that while growing up. She wants to live like that... So the mother gets thrilled hearing this... She was like: "What would have happened if you didn't marry into our family! I would have gotten a snobbish girl as a daughter-in-law, who'd look down on us and talk behind our back! I don't want to even think about it!"
KS: (joining them) What about me? Don't you care about your poor son who slept in the sofa all night? (BTW~ Did you all notice the small couch where KS slept in? That must have felt like sleeping inside an airplane... tight tight, and uncomfortable...)
Mother: I'm amazed! You just got married and I see you waking up so early in the morning.
KS: My back hurts so much I couldn't sleep at all.
Mother: (to DA) Do you know something? KS wet his bed even after entering elementary school.
KS: Mother!
Mother: He knew how to read when he was 4 and he entered school knowing the table of multiplication. But somehow... he couldn't stop that.
KS: What's wrong with everyone in this family! Did you all plot together to humiliate me in front of this woman?
Mother: She should know those things.
KS: (Looking defiantly at DA) Yes! I wet my pants till I was 8. Are you happy now?
DA: The more I know you, you're far from being a charismatic man.
KS: If you'll continue saying these things, I'll leave home!
DA: (Looking down) Wow look! It's a roach!
KS jumps and hides behind DA.
DA: You're really scared of them...
KS: You're having too much fun dissing your husband!
QUOTE who told you to be such a coward~ !
<<<i think grandfather saying to SY they need to do something>>>>
Grandfather tells SY that they should both meet up outside the house (to discuss secret stuffs).
<<<the father waiting outside ~ i guess he is clear of his sins ..but the mother still asked him to keep his hands off ~>>>>
KS's Mom: (to DA) Are you ready?
KS's Dad: Honey, why are you taking her with you?
Mom: (to Dad) I was so confused yesterday I couldn't look at her face well! (to DA) You saw her, didn't you? You can recognize her face, right? (to Dad) One never knows... What if you replaced that girl with someone else?!
Dad: You should trust me...
Mom: How could I trust you!
AFTER CHECKING THE GIRL OUT
Mother tells DA to have dinner with KS instead of coming straight home. But DA refuses.
Mother: I'm telling you to comfort your husband for having slept so uncomfortably in the sofa.
<<<== grandfather outside with SY . he saying to want to make what he said as truth .. is he saying to like make known that it is SY having the problem .like what SY said before .and let JA not feel so bad ..
SY asked JA out .^ TY was asking why you two are still on date ...it will make MS jealous and want me to do the same ~ . = at the school ...HJ run into one of her senior from before ~....HG saw the senior rubbing HJ hair ~ .hmm the senior abit werid ..trying to chat on HJ .though she doesnt seem to like welcome .. HG is really speaking with jealous eyes and asked HJ who is that man ~ ......the HG still doesnt seem happy with that answer ..lolll he doesnt like to see male senior doing such things to her .or rather why would a male senior do this to her if he doesnt have other interest or whatever .~ and he walked of ======= KS with DA outside having dinner ~ ..KS seem like complaining abt what the father did .to get him into trouble but DA seem to say it is interesting ~ between his parents ~
i dun know why KS suddenly act angry and say he has no appeitte to eat anymore ~ ohhhh now they doing the coffee and phone message thing again ~ lol ...i hope this time we dun end up in accident ~>>>>
KS complains that his mother's giving him "sickness and remedy" at the same time (that she's playing with his emotions, giving him a problem and the solution).
DA: You're upset, aren't you?
KS: What do you mean?
DA: Your parents like me more than they like you. You're jealous, aren't you?
KS: That's right. The ball that came in later kicked the other ball out. So I'm jealous. Are you satisfied?
DA: Isn't your pride hurting? There's nothing this woman can't do. She plays the cards so well... she has no weaknesses... she's perfect. You're thinking that, aren't you?
KS: Are you writing a drama?
DA: I should find something more drastic to hurt your pride with. Hmmm... I can kill a roach with my bare hands. I finished my toilet training before I turned one.
KS: (throwing the fork away) I'm not eating!
DA: Your ego's hurt, so you can't eat?
KS: I can't eat after hearing about roaches! Happy now?
<<<<~ ohhhh now they doing the coffee and phone message thing again ~ lol ...i hope this time we dun end up in accident ~
er i think KS also share the same worry he froze when he saw this man who is a bit suspicious nearby ..and only when he realise it wasnt waht he think .then he haeved a sign of relief. DA held on his hands ..he cant seem to have a peace of mind with that man outside somewhere ....but DA comfort him
in his car ..he keep holding on so hard on her hands ...she asked why are you doing this .. he said it make him feel better i think~...oh suddenly he had to brake because of a car ..and he turned so worried if DA is okay .reminding what he know that it make her so scared if car are not driving steady . but she turned and just say .it is okay .she has him now ..and doesnt feel scared anymore like that
ohhh so cutee DA leaned over ot kiss him haha .and he suddenly stop the car at the road side ~see i was driving quietly and you do this and HE !!! . ......
OMGGGGGG this is the kiss i like to seee ~~ HAHAHA ...>>>>
DA tells him that they've been through so much that she's not scared anymore. And that... though she hopes it won't happen again... if they must go through another such trial... she's sure they'll survive.
WHILE DRIVING
DA asks him why he's holding her hand while driving, that it's dangerous. He tells her that he doesn't want to let go of his wife's hand, not even for a second.
DA: "I wonder how long it's going to last?... They say that the deepest fires burn down all the sooner. A month later, you might be telling me not to touch you, that I'm bothering while you're driving."
KS: "I dare you live till that day comes." (A car comes, dangerously cutting them off. KS steps on the breaks abruptly. He looks at DA, worried for her.)
DA: Didn't I tell you it's dangerous?
KS: Are you OK? Aren't you in shock?
DA: (smiling) I don't get like that anymore. I think I don't fear anything when I'm with you.
KS: (driving with both hands on wheel) I won't drive like this anymore. I can't do this. It's one thing to see you getting pale in shock... but now my heart sinks... so I can't do this anymore.
DA: I thought I'd never get over this. I thought I'd always get panicky when people step on the break suddenly... Isn't this amazing, seeing that I've healed naturally. Once you asked me if I didn't need some kind of remedy. I now feel I'm cured of that. And this... is my prize to you for curing me of this... (she kisses him on his cheek...)
KS: (He stops the car on the side) This is a punishment for touching someone who was quietly driving. (He kisses her deeply...!)
QUOTE the kiss in motion ~that is such a sweet punishment *i want to be punished too~*
<<<>>>
Two girls were fighting over him and he tried to separate them when he got hit accidentally by one of them (a different girl). He's like "This all happens because I'm too popular with girls..."
TY: It's all because of you're just like your dad. I was always popular with girls.
Grandpa: Not only you... I was handsome enough when I was young, many girls cried over me.
GrandAunt: Brother... I think you're getting senile...
<<< they returned home to see the police friend of MS sending the maid home ~ ============== granny seem to be forgetting something again ...she also somehow sense something is wrong with her . i think she saying to the young mistress , is it time you are taking me with you ?~ ============================================== Lee family ...wow they having such a spread .~~ ..the father in law cant stop praising DA haha and then KS was going to say the same thing .till DA signed him with her elbow * well rem what she taught him at the honeymoon .haha he turned the direction to say his mother also quite good .~at the dishes . and the father also see the signal .and started to say nice things about the mother . lol but i think the mother see through their act
later up in the room haha DA seem to lecture him abit again ~ * ohh i like this suit on him ) lee kang seok life is really so poor thing .. haha DA was telling KS she will be going shopping with the mother in law and KS was like so horrified and say oh nooooo .and DA Was asking what~~ hahahah she will soon know what her mother in law is like when she go shopping .>>>>
Granny was planning to wash the blankets but Jomal tells her they did that yesterday. So granny tells the dead mistress: "My lady!~ I think it's time you call me home..."
DINNER TIME @ the LEE'S
Dad: This is the best potato soup I've ever tasted in my entire life! (Mother's staring)
KS: It's soooo delicious! What a great soup...! (He looks at DA's face and he remembers...) But this is nothing compares to the soup mother makes. Isn't it so, father?
Dad: (Getting it) Yes... Of course! No matter what, the potato soup your mother makes is the best!
KS: (to DA) You should practice some more. Get the secret recipe from mother, OK?
Mom: Are you going into acting school?
KS: What?
Mom: You should practice acting some more. It's too obvious you can't act.
KS: This isn't right...
Dad: She's telling you to practice some more acting! I could also tell you were just acting...
IN THEIR ROOM
DA: Can't you get that one right? Didn't we practice during our honeymoon?
KS: Here you go again!
DA: If you can't act, don't even try it!
KS: I tried my best after getting your signal.
DA: Just go to work, my husband who can't do anything right.
KS: Lee Kang Suk!~ I can't believe your life turned this way! Before I met you, I thought highly of myself...
DA: I could tell ever since the day you couldn't win the teddy bear for me.
KS: Oh, that's right! We must go get you some teddy bear. Let's go win the bear after work.
DA: We can't. I must go shopping with mother.
KS: Oh no!~ Shopping with mother would take you a minimum of 10 hours!
DA: 10 hours?!
<<< ahhhh she getting DA so many new clothes ~~ ...the mother in law think her daugthre in law is a model ~but the dresses were nice ~ haha DA in the dressing room and KS called .....hahah asked how is the shopping ..~ DA was like out of breathe because she was so busy trying the dress in the dress room and say she busy and shut the phone ~ ================================ KS called his mother haha i think to rescue his wife ~ ...he told the wife ..the person * DA will be tired out from the shopping ..the mother in law simled and say this new groom .and asked if DA is tired haha ..the mother then say bye to the son on the phone ~...................finally they can sit down to eat`~!
ohhhh the run into one of her high and mighty friend ~! ..with the daughter .~!it just happen that DA knew the guest the other person was with ~! ..ah the person seem to speak well of professor HA, the mother in law feel abit pride now infront of the friend ~and the mother in law started to praise DA to the skies infront of the friend ~but the other daughter and mother pair seem to want to put them down with certain topic .haha but instead DA outspoke them~
the mother in law was soooo happy and went home telling the father and son about it!^^KS has no shame in saying how good his wife is ~>>>>
Mother: Let's drink some tea before continuing.
Voice of woman: My goodness, Mrs. Lee!
Mother: (Forcing a smile) Mrs. Choi!
Choi: This must be your daughter-in-law.
Mother: Yes.
Choi: I'm sad. Why wasn't I invited to the wedding? Please, sit down.
DA: (at the lady sitting in front) Professor!
Prof: Professor Ha Danah?
DA: (Smiling) Yes.
Prof: We saw each other at the seminar in Jeju, didn't we?
DA: Yes.
Prof: Nice to meet you here. Come sit over here.
Mother: Do you know each other?
DA: Yes, she's a professor at Seorundae University.
Prof: (to mother) You've got a great daughter-in-law. Many professors expect great things from her.
Choi: (to mother, pointing at the prof.) She's joining our Arts Club as an instructor. (pointing at the girl on her right) My daughter-in-law has lots of interest in history too, so I brought her along.
NEXT
Prof: (To DA) I read your last dissertation. It was great. (To mother) Our colleagues and I are nervous seeing this young and upstart of a professor!
DA: You're overpraising me.
Mother: In whatever she does, she won't rest till she gets it right.
Prof: Yes, you must be so proud of her.
Mother: She is great with academics. But she also excels in housework. I couldn't praise her enough!
DA: Mother...
Prof: Let her be. Your mother-in-law's so proud of you.
Choi: If you were so proud of her, why didn't you announced it to the world by preparing a bigger wedding? You didn't have anything to hide, did you? I wonder why the wedding was so secretive.
Girl: Mom, should we order more tea? (She's talking informally, the way only daughters talk to real mothers. To your in-laws, you should speak 'formally')
Choi: Shall we?
Girl: Excuse me... We need more tea & water.
Choi: My daughter-in-law studied abroad so she's very comfortable with people, even with me. She calls me mommy, mommy, you can't help but adore her.
Girl: I feel that talking too respectfully to your mother-in-law feels too cold and distant... am I the only one thinking like this?
Prof: Your daughter-in-law speaks the mind of the young people of today. Young people nowadays are trying to break down the gaps by talking more informally...
Choi: I feel this kind of language is very cute.
Girl: (to DA) Do you have fun studying history?
DA: Ye... Yes.
Girl: After studying abroad, I feel our history's too limited.
Prof: How so?
Girl: For example, when I read books by Homer like The Iliad and Odyssey, there are times I feel awed by the literary depths. Why is it that we don't have such great literary works like those? It's such a pity. Same goes with our folklore.
Prof: Do you agree, professor Ha?
DA: Have you heard of the LEGEND OF BARI-DEKI (?).
Girl: Bari... Deki?
DA: Yes. I suggest you read it if you have time. You will find lots of literary depths, no less than what you found reading THE ILIAD or ODYSSEY.
Mother: (to Choi) You've been studying history for this long. But I guess you haven't touched that subject yet.
AT LEE'S RESIDENCE
Mother: I finally felt released from the ten years of cold shoulders I got from them. You should have seen them, that woman with the daughter-in-law with informal language, how their faces got all wrinkled up.
Father: You've been through hell trying to get into that Club. You've finally gotten even with them.
Mother: From now, I won't join that Club, not even if they beg me.
Father: (to DA) Your mother-in-law can now lift her head up, thanks to you.
KS: This is the wife I picked for mother's sake.
Father: (to KS) You can't stay one moment without boasting about yourself, can you?
<<<haha then the thing about washroom .i really think the mother told DA about how KS wet his bed when he was young was it ...and KS Was soooo upset whenever DA bring up the thing about washroom..and he say he going to the washroom!>>>>
KS puts hot towel over her leg wound, scolding her for following his mom around all day, neglecting her leg.
DA: That's enough. (She takes his hands off and covers her leg with the blanket)
KS: Let's do some more. It's pretty swollen.
DA: I'm OK. (KS looks at her reproachfully) What's wrong?
KS: I told you not to feel embarrassed.
DA: It's not that...
KS: Then what?
DA: We'll lose the mysterious feeling for each other if we see too much of our nakedness...
KS: Mysterious feelings? We'll be discharging gas all throughout.
DA: Are you going to discharge gas in front of me?
KS: That happens naturally. What do you want me to do?
DA: I always go to the bathroom...
KS: You go to the bathroom to expel gas? (She nods) Your way of life is very complicated, you know... (he stands up)
DA: Where are you going?
KS: I'm going to the bathroom to expel gas!
